Grand Canyon
may 2006
Itinerary & Journal
This is the second page (First Page) of the itinerary that we were given for the trip. For the most part we were able to stay pretty close to this.
Journal excerpts are given below, and you can click on them to go to the full entry for that day.
Day 6, Second Day of Hike: Grand Canyon National Park
Escalante Route near the bottom of New Hance Trail along the Colorado River.
Journal EntryJournal Excerpt
..... This section was the most technically demanding section of the
entire time in the Canyon. We climbed a couple of hundred feet,
and while it wasn't straight up, it was at quite an angle.
Day 7, Third Day of Hike: Grand Canyon National Park
Escalante Route in between New Hance Trail and Tanner Trail along the Colorado River.
Journal EntryJournal Excerpt
..... The river wound around a couple of corners and we
were right over a bluff that was probably two or three hundred feet over
the river. We could see across the river to a lowlying area right on
the other side of the river that contained a lot of old Anasazi Indian ruins....
Day 8, Fourth Day of Hike: Grand Canyon National Park
Escalante Route getting to the bottom of Tanner Trail along the Colorado River.
Journal EntryJournal Excerpt
...A squirrel chewed
through the side of his cup holder, through his food bag, and made a general
nuisance of himself. He also worked over a mini attache case thing that Nick
had. Nick mentioned drop kicking the squirrel into the river if the
opportunity presented itself.....
Day 9, Fifth Day of Hike: Grand Canyon National Park
Tanner Trail from the river to 1,800 foot below the Rim.
Journal EntryJournal Excerpt
... I feel like I'm just below the rim. So close that I can almost
reach out and touch it. I know that isn't true. I would estimate that a
day hiker would be looking at a 3 hour round trip hike to come down to where
we are and back up...
Day 10, Sixth Day of Hike: Grand Canyon National Park
Tanner Trail from 1,800 foot below the Rim to the Rim. From there, up through the Four Corners into Colorado and Mesa Verde.
Journal EntryJournal Excerpt
.... On day 4 we spent the day staring at a huge rock wall,
but from the rim it looks very, very small. The other thing I noticed
is how insignificant our trail looks in relation to the whole thing.
We covered a fair amount of ground, but the Grand Canyon is simply huge....
Day 11 and beyond: Colorado towards the midwest
Back to Illinois.
Journal EntryJournal Excerpt
... It's always depressing to leave the mountains behind, knowing that you
have nothing but relative flatness to look forward to. Guess it's time
to start reading a book....
